Survey of Construction (SOC)

Purpose

The Survey of Construction (SOC) is jointly sponsored by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Census Bureau. The purpose of the Survey of Construction is to provide current national and regional statistics on starts, completions, and characteristics of new, privately-owned single-family and multifamily housing units and on sales of new single-family houses.

SOC data is used to produce two Principle Federal Economic Indicators: New Residential Construction and New Residential Sales.
